Urgent Care vs the ER: When to Come In (and When We're Closed)

Your pet is sick and you are staring at the clock. Do you come to True Animal Vet, drive to a 24-hour ER, or wait until morning? The answer depends on whether we are open, how unstable your pet is, and whether they will need overnight ICU care after the first exam.

Urgent care is at both True Animal Vet hospitals: The Woodlands and Grand Oaks. We have extended weekday hours for convenience, but we are not open 24/7. During open hours we handle urgent illness and injury, and many emergencies. Overnight, Sunday, or a case that needs a 24-hour ICU should go to a dedicated ER. If you are unsure and we are open, call or text us. You do not have to make that call alone.

When urgent care is the right call

If we are open and something is wrong today, call us to see if you can come in. That is what urgent care is for. You do not need to decide on your own whether the problem is "urgent" or "an emergency." During open hours, True Animal Vet can evaluate both.

Come to an urgent care vet in The Woodlands or Grand Oaks when your pet is clearly unwell, in pain, or not themselves, and you want a doctor the same day. We act as one team, sharing medical records and treatment discussions across both hospitals.

You might notice a pet that will not eat, vomiting that is not settling, a wound, sudden lameness, a painful abdomen, or a problem that started after a walk or a meal. Trouble breathing, a hard swollen belly, seizures, a known toxin, collapse, or a male cat who cannot pee are reasons to come in now, or go to an ER if we are closed. This is not a complete list. If you are worried enough to look up help, that is enough reason to call.

Evening hours exist because a lot of this happens after work. An evening vet in Spring TX at Grand Oaks, or the same late weekday hours at The Woodlands, can see many of those cases without sending you to a 24-hour ER.

Wait until morning only if your pet is stable: eating, drinking, comfortable, and the issue can honestly sit overnight. If you are on the fence, do not wait. Come in while we are open, or go to an ER if we are closed.

Choose a dedicated 24-hour ER instead of waiting for us when we are closed, or when your pet is so unstable that they will need continuous monitoring after we lock the doors. We are honest about that line. We can do a great deal during the day and evening. We cannot stay open overnight.

●      Monday through Friday: 7:30am to 9pm

●      Saturday: 8am to 12pm

●      Sunday: closed

If it is 8pm on a Tuesday, you still might have time to make it in - be sure to call us first. If it is Sunday afternoon or 10pm on a Saturday, we are closed. Plan around the clock, not around hope that someone is still in the building.

Saturday is only from 8am to 12pm. If you wake up Saturday to a sick pet, come early or call first. After noon we are closed until Monday 7:30am. That stretch is ER territory unless your pet is truly stable and comfortable.

What to do after hours

Go to the nearest emergency hospital. Then call True Animal Vet when we reopen.

If we are closed, go straight to an ER. Waiting in our parking lot until morning is not safe if your pet is crashing (collapse, trouble breathing, or not responding). When we reopen, we can request records and continue care so you are not stuck at the ER for every next step. We typically recommend Blue Pearl in Spring as a high-quality 24/7 ER. We know the doctors there well and generally trust their judgment.

After-hours care is for when the clock has run out here. If we are still open, start with us. Call or text on the way so we can work you in.

What to expect when you arrive

We try to see you as quickly as the schedule allows. There may be a wait for a work-in appointment as we handle scheduled appointments or other emergent matters. Call or text on the way if you can.

If your pet gets anxious in a waiting room, ask the team about waiting outside or in your car when you check in. We typically are able to room clients and patients in short order to avoid waiting room fatigue.

Routine checkups, vaccines, and other non-urgent visits are a different story. If nothing is open same day, we may send you to the next scheduled appointment. Urgent problems are not treated that way. If your pet needs to be seen today, tell us that.

Bring a short history: when it started, what they ate, any toxin or trauma you know about, and current medications. That saves time once you are in the room.
